VALLEY MEDICAL GROUP

LGBTQ+ SERVICES AND RESOURCES

We remain steadfast in providing evidence-based, comprehensive, and culturally competent care to our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and non-binary (LGBTQI+) patients. Our staff and providers are dedicated to meeting the specific health needs of our LGBTQ+ patients with respect and compassion, and to improve access to care and health equity.

Our Medical Practice is situated in a state that safeguards patients and the practice of medicine. Here is a list of the current Massachusetts laws and protections:

  • It is unlawful in the state of Massachusetts to discriminate based on gender identity and expression in the areas of employment, housing, public education, credit/lending, and public accommodations.

  • Massachusetts hate crime laws were updated to include gender identity. This law was successfully defended on the Nov. 2018 ballot.

  • Chapter 127 of the Acts of 2022 codified expanded protections for reproductive and gender-affirming care, ensuring the Commonwealth’s ability to protect patients from out-of-state legal action

  • On 6/22/2023, the Healey-Driscoll Administration reaffirmed its support for gender-affirming care providers and patients, declaring Massachusetts a haven for transgender youth, adults, and families in response to increased restrictions across the nation:  “Gender-affirming care is a fundamental right and a critical health care need,” said Governor Maura Healey. “Our Administration will continue to do everything in our power to protect our patients and providers because we know that gender-affirming care is life-saving care. Massachusetts is and will continue to be, a haven – for clinicians, for transgender and non-binary folks, and for the people who love them.” “Gender-affirming care remains legal and protected in Massachusetts,” said Lieutenant Governor Driscoll. “Despite constant threats, challenges, and attacks on their professional and personal lives, Massachusetts’ gender-affirming care physicians and advocates have continued to provide essential care for those who need it. Our commitment to protecting access to this care starts with protecting the people who provide it. Massachusetts will continue to lead the nation in these measures.”

  • In Massachusetts, health insurance carriers cannot categorically exclude treatment for gender dysphoria.
